Our mission is to accurately assess property and provide prompt and courteous help to the public. We determine the value of property in Boston for the purpose of taxation.

Annual Property Maintenance Project

In the coming weeks, assessors from our department will be performing inspections at properties across the City. This is part of our annual Maintenance Project. Representatives will carry a photo ID badge by which you can verify his or her status as an Assessing Department employee.

Residential exemption update

This year, the residential exemption saved qualified homeowners $2,433 on their tax bill, nearly $500 more than last year's amount.

Taxpayers who qualified for a personal exemption may have further reduced their tax bill this year.

Taxpayer Referral and Assistance Center

Taxpayer Referral and Assistance Center

"TRAC" offers a "one-stop" service at City Hall for Boston taxpayers on tax-related matters.

Payment in Lieu of Tax (PILOT) Program

Many of Boston’s major schools, hospitals, and cultural institutions make a voluntary contribution to the City each year in the form of cash and community programs that uniquely benefit the City’s residents.

FY 2018 Preliminary Consideration Information Requisition Form
FY 2018 38D Online property tax return: form rc - residential/commercial
  • This return is a request, by law, for income and expense information. We use it to determine the value of the subject property and to set valuation standards.
  • The return is to be completed online. The form will be available the week of March 13, 2017, and is due within 60 days of the mailing date on the request letter.
  • If you fail to submit the form by the filing deadline, you may be barred from appealing the property assessment to the Massachusetts Appellate Tax Board. You may also receive a fine.
FY 2018 38D Property Tax Return: Form NC - New Construction
  • This return is a request, by law, for income and expense information. We use it to determine the value of the subject property.
  • The return is only available for 60 days following the mailing date of March 8, 2017.
  • If you fail to submit the form by the filing deadline, you may be barred from appealing the property assessment to the Massachusetts Appellate Tax Board. You may also receive fines.
