Signature requirements

Certified signatures

For the At-Large City Council race, you need to collect 1,500 certified signatures from registered voters to appear on the preliminary ballot. For District City Council races, you need 200 certified signatures of registered voters to appear on the preliminary ballot. There are exceptions for these three districts:

  • District 7: You need 195 certified signatures
  • District 8: You need 130 certified signatures
  • District 9: You need 164 certified signatures

The Election Department will only certify up to an additional 20 percent more than the requirement for signatures.

Residency requirement

If you run for District City Councilor, you need to have lived in district for at least one year before the election. That means that, for Election Day, November 5, 2019, candidates must have lived in their district before November 6, 2018.

Deadline Dates

Candidates must pick up and file all paperwork related to their nominations at the Boston Election Department in Boston City Hall, Room 241.
