Coastal Resilience for South Boston
We are taking action to protect the South Boston waterfront from coastal flooding.
As part of the Climate Ready Boston initiative, the Coastal Resilience Solutions for South Boston plan presented near-term and long-term strategies to adapt the South Boston waterfront to coastal flooding from sea level rise and storms. Together, the coastal resilience solutions create a vision for the future of the South Boston coastline that reduces coastal flood risk, improves connectivity and accessibility, and enhances recreation and public amenities along the Harborwalk.

ABOUT THE PLAN
The Coastal Resilience Solutions for South Boston plan builds upon the Climate Ready Boston initiative. It aims to maintain the South Boston community's ability to thrive in the face of coastal flooding resulting from climate change.
The plan presents strategies to protect each vulnerable coastal area over time. Each strategy incorporates an analysis of current and future flood risk, stakeholder and community engagement, and preliminary design and engineering assessments. Since the plan’s release in 2018, the City and its partners continue to engage with the South Boston community as we further the design and development of coastal resilience projects to build a resilient waterfront for all.
During the planning process, the City studied the waterfront in South Boston from the Fort Point Channel to Moakley Park. The study area included:
- Fort Point Channel;
- The South Boston/Seaport waterfront;
- Seaport Boulevard;
- The Raymond L. Flynn Marine Park and the Reserved Channel; and
- The South Boston neighborhood along Pleasure Bay, Castle Island, and Day Boulevard.

IN-PROGRESS PROJECTS
Fort Point Channel
Led by the BPDA, the Resilient Fort Point Channel Infrastructure Project will advance the design proposed by Climate Ready Boston.
Moakley Park
In early 2019, the City completed the Moakley Park Vision Plan, which is a vision for adding climate resilience and new programs to the park. Led by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department, the park redesign is currently underway.
Raymond Flynn Marine Park
Led by the BPDA, the Flood Resilience Mitigation Planning & Feasibility Study will advance flood protection strategies for the Raymond L. Flynn Marine Park.
Resilient Moakley Park Connectors
The City of Boston and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts are working together to advance the design of coastal resilience strategies in the areas north and south of Moakley Park
