The JROTC program has expanded from the first unit, established in the Mario Umana High School in East Boston in 1976 to one which now includes 6 Boston High Schools.  The goal of the program is to motivate young people to become better citizens. The purpose is not to prepare students for active military service, but to develop leadership, responsibility, self-esteem and an understanding of good citizenship.
