Boston MBTA Shutdowns 2026

mAY 9 – 10

New Bedford/Fall River, Greenbush, and Kingston Commuter Rail Line service will be suspended between Braintree and South Station (including at Quincy Center) on May 9 - 10 to perform work as part of critical maintenance work on the Old Colony Lines.

There will be no shuttle bus service during this service change.

• Passengers should instead utilize Red Line service between South Station and Braintree (via Quincy Center) for Commuter Rail connections beyond Braintree or Quincy Center. 

Riders traveling to/from South Station should budget at least 15 minutes of additional travel time. A dedicated diversion schedule will be available on MBTA.com/CR

April 22 - 30.

Green Line B branch service will be suspended between Kenmore and Boston College on April 22-24 and April 27-30 as part of infrastructure improvements and the continued installation of Green Line Train Protection System (GLTPS).

• Free and accessible shuttle buses will replace service between Kenmore and Boston College. Shuttle buses will not stop at Allston Street, Griggs Street, nor Packard’s Corner due to accessibility issues.
• Alternatively, on April 22 – 24 and April 27 – 30, riders can utilize free Route 57 bus service. Route 57 is not recommended for alternative service during the weekend of April 25 – 26 as there will be no Green Line service at Kenmore. 

Riders should budget at least an additional 10 minutes of travel time.

Note that the B branch suspension will extend from Kenmore to Copley during the weekend of April 25 – 26, and shuttling will extend to Back Bay as outlined below.

May 2 – 4

Red Line service will be suspended between Broadway and Quincy Center on May 2 – 4 for signal upgrade work. Service will operate as usual between Quincy Center and Braintree.

Free and accessible shuttle bus service will make all stops between Broadway and Quincy Center. 

• Accessible van service will be available between Broadway and Quincy Center on Monday, May 4. Riders should see station personnel for assistance.
• Riders using shuttle buses should budget 40-50 minutes of additional travel time.

The fare gates will be open at Broadway, JFK/UMass, and Quincy Center. Riders should also consider fare-free Commuter Rail service between Braintree, Quincy Center, JFK/UMass, and South Station on the Fall River/New Bedford, Kingston, and Greenbush Lines.

May 14 – 18

Red Line service will be suspended between Broadway and Ashmont from 6:00 PM on May 14 through the end of service on May 18 for signal upgrade work. Service will operate as usual between JFK/UMass and Braintree.

Free and accessible shuttle bus service will make all stops between Broadway and Ashmont. 

• Accessible van service will be available between Broadway and Ashmont, upon request. 
• Riders using shuttle buses should budget 30-40 minutes of additional travel time.

The fare gates will be open at Broadway and JFK/UMass. Riders should also consider fare-free Commuter Rail service between Braintree, Quincy Center, JFK/UMass, and South Station on the Fall River/New Bedford, Kingston, and Greenbush Lines.

May 14 – 16

Mattapan Line service will be suspended between Ashmont and Mattapan from 6:00 PM on May 14 through the end of service on May 16 for critical power work within the MBTA’s Codman Yard facility. 

Free and accessible shuttle bus service will make all stops between Ashmont and Mattapan. Riders using shuttle buses should budget at least 15 minutes of additional travel time.

Alternatively, riders can utilize Fairmount Commuter Rail Line service at Blue Hill Avenue Station.

May 29 – 31

Red Line service will be suspended between Broadway & Ashmont (Ashmont Branch) and Broadway & North Quincy (Braintree Branch) on May 29 – 31 for signal upgrade work. 

Free and accessible shuttle bus service will make all stops between Broadway and Ashmont, as well as Broadway and North Quincy. 

• Accessible van service will be available between Broadway and Ashmont as well as Broadway and Quincy Center, upon request. 
• Riders using shuttle buses should budget 40-50 minutes of additional travel time.

The fare gates will be open at Broadway and Quincy Center. Riders should also consider fare-free Commuter Rail service between Braintree, Quincy Center, JFK/UMass, and South Station. For more information regarding this closure, please visit MBTA's website.

May 6 – 17

Green Line C Branch service will be suspended between Kenmore and Cleveland Circle on May 6–17 for the installation of critical Green Line Train Protection System (GLTPS) infrastructure. 

• Free and accessible shuttle bus service will replace train service between Kenmore and Cleveland Circle. Shuttles will not stop at Saint Mary’s Street, Kent Street, or Brandon Hall. Riders should instead utilize shuttle bus service at the next nearest stop. Shuttle riders should budget at least 15 minutes of additional travel time.
• The MBTA will increase Green Line D Branch service in Downtown Boston during this time to accommodate riders. Riders at Cleveland Circle are encouraged to instead utilize D branch service at Reservoir, which is 0.1 miles away (or about a 2-3 minute walk).

May 30 – June 5

Green Line E Branch service will be suspended between Government Center and Heath Street on May 30–June 5 for the installation of critical Green Line Train Protection System (GLTPS) infrastructure. 

• Riders can instead utilized parallel Route 39 bus service, which will have increased service. Riders should budget at least an additional 10 minutes of travel in additional to their regular commute.

May 9 – 10

Blue Line service will be suspended between Bowdoin and Airport on May 9 – 10 for essential infrastructure upgrades, track renewal, and other critical revitalization work.  

• Free and accessible shuttle buses will make stops at Airport, Maverick, and Haymarket for transfer to Orange and Green Line service in the downtown area. It will not stop at Aquarium, State, Government Center, or Bowdoin. Shuttle riders should budget at least 30–40 minutes of additional travel time.
• Accessible van service will be available within the downtown area. Riders should see station personnel for assistance.
• Riders may also use the East Boston Ferry, which will be free during the suspension with trips departing every 30 minutes from 6 AM to 9 AM, every 15 minutes from 9 AM to 9 PM, and a trip at 9:30 PM. A schedule can be found here. 

The fare gates will be open between Airport and Wonderland for free Blue Line service during the suspension.
