Install or Replace a Sign on Your Business

If you’re repairing or installing a sign for your business, you’ll need either a Short-Form or a Long-Form permit depending on if the sign is new. You’ll also need an Electrical Permit for any lighting or bulbs in your sign.

Who can install or repair a sign?

  • Property owners and contractors can apply for the Short-form or Long-form Permit.
  • Only a contractor with a valid, non-expired Massachusetts trade license may apply for an Electrical Permit and perform any electrical work related to installing signs.
  • We recommend you hire a contractor who can perform all steps of the installation.

What permits do I need?

Short-Form Permit
  • For work being done on an existing sign.
OR
Long-Form Permit
  • For installing a new sign where one did not exist before.
Additional Permits

You will need other permits that only licensed contractors can apply for, including:

Electrical Permit
  • For installing or repairing any electrical wiring or services.
