Residency Requirements for City Workers

Learn more about the residency requirement you need to meet to work for the City of Boston.

Anyone can apply to work for the City, but you must be a resident by your first day of work. The City passed an ordinance in 1994 that states all workers have to show proof of their residency each year.

If you don’t provide proof of your residency, your department will consider it a voluntary termination. You have to stay a resident for the entire length of your job with the City, but there are different rules for different unions.

You have to submit your residency forms to your department by February 1 of each year:

For more details about the requirement, read the ordinance in Section 5-5.3 of the City of Boston Municipal Code.
