Notarizing Documents in the City Clerk's Office
The City Clerk's Office provides notary services during normal business hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. No appointments are necessary.
Staff are available to notarize documents through the workday.
There is a $5 fee for each document that needs to be notarized.
The following Guidelines pertain to notarizing documents:
- A valid government-issued photo identification (driver's license or passport) is required.
- Full document being notarized must be presented to the Notary.
- Documents to be notarized cannot be signed or dated prior to appearing in front of the Notary Public.
- All signers must be present at time of notarizing.
- The Notary must witness the document being signed
- Documents must contain the appropriate notarial statement or clause, or one will be stamped on the document by the Notary.
- Vital records (birth, death, and marriage certificates) cannot be copied or notarized.
- Massachusetts law requires that a Notary and the person seeking notarization be able to communicate directly with each other.
- In situations where a "witness" is required, the individual who's document needs to be notarized will need to bring a witness with them who is personally known to the individual, and the witness must also have a valid photo ID.
- In accordance with state law, Notaries will not provide services if the customer, document, or circumstances of the request for notary services raise any issue of authenticity, ambiguity, doubt, or uncertainty. In this event the notary may, at their discretion, decline to provide notary services.
