Boston MBTA Shutdowns 2026

Upcoming Diversions and Shutdowns

Jan 3–4, Jan 17–18, Jan 31–Feb 1 

Sections of the Fitchburg, Haverhill, Lowell, and Newbury/Rockport Commuter Rail Lines will be suspended during the weekends of January 3–4, January 17–18, and January 31–February 1 to upgrade the North Station Terminal Area Signal System, which will reduce train delays and improve service reliability. A dedicated diversion schedule will be available on MBTA.com/CR.

Fitchburg Line

The Fitchburg Line will be suspended between North Station and Porter. There will be no shuttle bus service.

  • Riders should use the Red Line for alternative service between Porter and downtown Boston.

Riders should budget at least 20 minutes of additional travel time during this service change.

Haverhill Line

The Haverhill Line will be suspended between North Station and Oak Grove. There will be no shuttle bus service.

  • Riders should use the Orange Line for alternative service between Oak Grove, Malden Center, and North Station. 

Riders should budget at least 10 minutes of additional travel time during this service change.

LOWELL Line

The Lowell Line will be suspended between North Station and Anderson/WoburnFree and accessible shuttle bus service will replace suspended train service.

  • Local shuttle buses will make all stops between North Station and Anderson/Woburn.
  • Express shuttle buses will operate directly between North Station and Anderson/Woburn. 

Riders should budget up to 15 minutes of additional travel time on the express shuttle and up to 40 minutes on the local shuttle.

Newburyport/Rockport Line

The Newburyport/Rockport Line will be suspended between North Station and SwampscottFree and accessible shuttle bus service will replace suspended train service.

  • Local shuttle buses will make all stops between North Station and Swampscott except River Works.
  • Express shuttle buses will operate directly between North Station and Swampscott. 

Riders should budget up to 40 minutes of additional travel time on the express shuttle and up to 70 minutes on the local shuttle.

CRNS26 Newburyport-Rockport Diagram

Jan 31 – Feb 1

Needham Commuter Rail Line service will be suspended between Needham Heights and South Station on January 31 – February 1 to perform work as part of the West Roxbury Parkway Bridge Replacement project.

There will be no shuttle bus service during this service change. Passengers are encouraged to take local buses as an alternative. 

  • West Roxbury ⟷ Forest Hills (and Orange Line transfers) = use Bus Routes 35, 36, and 37
  • Needham Junction ⟷ Newton Highlands (and Green Line transfers) = use Bus Route 59 

Rider using the above local bus routes should budget at least 35 minutes of additional travel time. A dedicated diversion schedule will be available on MBTA.com/CR.
