Boston MBTA Shutdowns 2026

Upcoming Diversions and Shutdowns

Upcoming Diversions and Shutdowns

April 10 – 12, April 24 – 27

Sections of the Fitchburg, Haverhill, Lowell, and Newbury/Rockport Commuter Rail Lines will be suspended Friday through Sunday on April 10 – 12, and Friday through Monday April 24 – 27 to upgrade the North Station Terminal Area Signal System, which will reduce train delays and improve service reliability. A dedicated diversion schedule will be available on MBTA.com/CR.

Fitchburg Line

The Fitchburg Line will be suspended between North Station and Porter. There will be no shuttle bus service.

  • Riders should use the Red Line for alternative service between Porter and downtown Boston.

Riders should budget at least 20 minutes of additional travel time during this service change.

Haverhill Line

The Haverhill Line will be suspended between North Station and Oak Grove. There will be no shuttle bus service.

  • Riders should use the Orange Line for alternative service between Oak Grove, Malden Center, and North Station. 

Riders should budget at least 10 minutes of additional travel time during this service change.

Lowell Line

The Lowell Line will be suspended between North Station and Anderson/WoburnFree and accessible shuttle bus service will replace suspended train service.

  • Local shuttle buses will make all stops between North Station and Anderson/Woburn.
  • Express shuttle buses will operate directly between North Station and Anderson/Woburn. 

Riders should budget up to 15 minutes of additional travel time on the express shuttle and up to 40 minutes on the local shuttle.

Newburyport/Rockport Line

The Newburyport/Rockport Line will be suspended between North Station and SwampscottFree and accessible shuttle bus service will replace suspended train service.

  • Local shuttle buses will make all stops between North Station and Swampscott except River Works.
  • Express shuttle buses will operate directly between North Station and Swampscott. 

Riders should budget up to 40 minutes of additional travel time on the express shuttle and up to 70 minutes on the local shuttle.

CRNS26 Newburyport-Rockport Diagram

April 11 – 12April 18 – 19, April 25 – 26

New Bedford/Fall River, Greenbush, and Kingston Commuter Rail Line service will be suspended between Braintree and South Station (including at Quincy Center) on April 11 – 12, April 18 – 19, and April 25 – 26 to perform work as part of critical maintenance work on the Old Colony Lines.

There will be no shuttle bus service during this service change.

  • Passengers should instead utilize Red Line service between South Station and Braintree (via Quincy Center) for Commuter Rail connections beyond Braintree or Quincy Center. 

Riders traveling to/from South Station should budget at least 15 minutes of additional travel time. A dedicated diversion schedule will be available on MBTA.com/CR

April 22 - 30.

Green Line B branch service will be suspended between Kenmore and Boston College on April 22-24 and April 27-30 as part of infrastructure improvements and the continued installation of Green Line Train Protection System (GLTPS).

  • Free and accessible shuttle buses will replace service between Kenmore and Boston College. Shuttle buses will not stop at Allston Street, Griggs Street, nor Packard’s Corner due to accessibility issues.
  • Alternatively, on April 22 – 24 and April 27 – 30, riders can utilize free Route 57 bus service. Route 57 is not recommended for alternative service during the weekend of April 25 – 26 as there will be no Green Line service at Kenmore. 

Riders should budget at least an additional 10 minutes of travel time.

Green Line B shutdown extents and weekend extension

Note that the B branch suspension will extend from Kenmore to Copley during the weekend of April 25 – 26, and shuttling will extend to Back Bay as outlined below.

 

April 25 – 26.

Green Line service will be suspended for infrastructure upgrades between Copley and Boston College on the B branch, St. Mary’s on the C branch, and Brookline Hills on the D branch on the weekend of April 25 – 26.

  • The Green Line will run at reduced frequency between Copley and Government Center. Riders are encouraged to utilize Orange Line service at Back Bay for continued service through downtown.  
  • Riders may also travel to Copley from Back Bay, which is about a quarter mile (or a five-minute walk).
  • The Worcester Commuter Rail Line will be fare-free between South Station, Back Bay, and Lansdowne stations during this service change. Regular fares will apply for travel beyond Lansdowne.

Riders using shuttles buses should budget ample additional travel time. For example, a rider travelling to Park Street from Riverside should budget at least an additional 45 minutes of travel in additional to their regular commute. 

B Branch

Free and accessible shuttle buses will operate between Boston College and Back Bay. 

  • Shuttle buses will not stop at Allston Street, Griggs Street, nor Packard’s Corner due to accessibility issues.

Diversion extents between Copley and Boston College

Free and accessible shuttle buses will operate between St. Mary’s and Back Bay.

  • Riders can travel between Saint Mary’s station and the Park Drive @ Beacon Street shuttle stop, which is less than a quarter mile (or a four-minute walk).
  • Fares will be free at all surface-level stops west of Saint Mary’s.

Diversion extents between Copley and St. Mary's

d branch

Free and accessible shuttle buses will operate between Brookline Hills and Back Bay. 

  • There will be free fares at Riverside with the fare gates open.
  • Fares will be free at all surface-level stops west of Brookline Hills.
