About the project

The Rutherford Ave/Sullivan Square Design Project is a $200+M Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) project that will reconstruct Sullivan Square and convert Rutherford Ave into multimodal boulevard with a linear park. This is the largest fully-funded, municipally-led roadway project in the Commonwealth.

We are working with the community to design a modern, safe, people-centered connection between Sullivan Square and City Square.

The project will address fundamental safety, accessibility, and mobility issues within the existing corridor. The project includes:

  • An at-grade design design that eliminates flood-prone, space-intensive, and costly underpasses
  • Reorientation of the project area to serve pedestrians, with expansion of sidewalks, more crosswalks, and a linear park
  • Replacement of the existing crash-prone Sullivan Square Circle with a more neighborhood-scaled street grid
  • Opportunities for improved transit access and service including bus priority lanes
  • Traffic engineering to limit cut-through traffic on Charlestown streets
  • Coordination with improvements to the John J. Ryan Playground as well as new development projects

LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR COLLABORATION

The City of Boston is currently reevaluating the Rutherford Avenue design to better align it with its Go Boston 2030 goal of increasing transit use citywide. We also want to create a corridor that is equipped to manage potential future growth.
