The new bridge will complement the Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge next door. The new bridge will be walkable, multi-modal, green, and sustainable. Everyone will be able to safely use the bridge. That includes pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.

The design calls for:

wider sidewalks
gathering places
innovative accent lighting
protected bicycle facilities, and
smoother walking surfaces to support the Freedom Trail.

September 16, 2017: Advertised for Bidding

Construction Phase

February 27, 2018: Bids Opened
August 18, 2018: “Notice to Proceed” Provided to JW White
2019/2020: Temporary bridge constructed
July 18, 2020: Traffic switched to temporary bridge
December 9, 2023: Traffic switched to permanent bridge
October 21, 2024: Ceremony celebrating the Bridge Renamed William Felton “Bill” Russell Bridge
Summer 2025: Anticipate all lanes on permanent bridge to be open
