We assessed the physical spaces in each Boston Public School building to understand whether each school facility currently supports the BPS High-Quality Student Experience. Higher scores indicate that the building supports more components of the High-Quality Student Experience.
Many of our school buildings are too small or outdated to fully support the High-Quality Student Experience – even with major investments. We also assessed which of our school buildings or sites could fit a Model Space Summary through a new build, expansion, or gut renovation.
In the dashboard below, you can explore overall Building Experience Score data by school and by neighborhood. You can also see which of our school buildings or sites could fit a Model Space Summary in the future.

Overall student enrollment has declined across Boston, but this looks different when you look closer, neighborhood by neighborhood. Some parts of Boston have more school seats than nearby students to fill them, while others have more students nearby than available seats. Where there are too many empty seats, our resources are stretched too thin.
One way to measure this is by looking at each school’s utilization rate. The utilization rate is a school’s total student enrollment divided by the building’s total capacity.
The maps below show the current utilization rate of each of our BPS buildings.
Utilization Rate for Early Learning Centers and Elementary Schools:
Utilization Rate for Secondary Schools:
