Install Or Replace Siding
If you’re replacing siding on a home or building, you’ll need a Short-Form permit and in some cases, and an Electrical Permit if any electrical wiring must be moved or installed.
Who can install or replace siding?
- Homeowners and contractors can apply for the permit and install or replace siding if the work is being done on a 1-2 unit owner-occupied home.
- You must hire a contractor to apply for the permit and perform the work if it’s being done on a three-family or bigger dwelling, such as:
- an apartment building
- a multi-unit condo, or
- one floor of a triple-decker house
- If the work involves any electrical wiring, you must also hire a contractor with a valid, non-expired Massachusetts trade license.
What permits do I need?
Electrical Permit
- If any wiring must be installed, repaired, or moved during the installation of the siding.
Short-Form Permit
- If you are replacing siding and no other structural changes need to be made, such as cutting into a wall.
