How to file for preliminary consideration

Charities and religious groups that are seeking an exemption from property taxes before the start of the fiscal year can file a Preliminary Consideration Form. There are two options:

Before you get started

We make forms available in April and they are generally due by July 31. For Fiscal Year 2017, forms are due August 1, 2016.

When applying, an organization will need to give us additional information about the organization and the property, such as the articles of organization, trust, and by-laws as examples.

Go to Boston City Hall

You can fill out and complete a Preliminary Consideration Information Requisition Form at Boston City Hall. Visit the Assessing Department in Room 301 at:

Please contact Vanessa Weathers, Member, Board of Review, at 617-635-4260. She will send you a Preliminary Consideration Information Requisition Form that you can complete.
