Climate Resilience and Green Spaces

The City is committed to making sure every Bostonian will enjoy a more climate-resilient city.

The FY27 Budget continues to work toward the goals outlined in the City's Climate Action Plan and provide clean open spaces for all Bostonians.

Climate Budgeting

The City, a member of C40—an organization of cities addressing climate issues—launched a Climate Budgeting pilot in FY27. Climate budgeting incorporates climate considerations into budget proposals and review.

As part of the pilot, the budget process included an evaluation of the extent to which budget allocations are in line with five climate priorities: (1) Building decarbonization, (2) EV infrastructure and mode shifting, (3) Renewable energy, (4) Heat resilience, and (5) Coastal and stormwater resilience.

In this pilot, several departments discussed which projects and programs within their operating and capital budgets fall into a climate priority. Findings from this pilot will provide a framework for future years on how to evaluate Boston's budget through a climate lens.

  • Completed renovations at 15 parks across the City, including Copley Square, Clifford Playground, and Millennium Playground.
