City Councilor, At-Large

Erin J. Murphy is a Boston City Councilor At-Large and a dedicated public servant. She was sworn in for a fourth time on January 5, marking the beginning of her third full term on the Council.

Born and raised in Dorchester, Councilor Murphy later raised her children in the same neighborhood and now lives in Mattapan. She comes from a family deeply rooted in community advocacy. Her grandfather, Richard Murphy, helped organize the Dorchester United Neighborhood Association, transforming a former landfill into a community park and school that now bears his name. Her mother and Aunt Kay were instrumental in establishing Boston’s first teen center, creating safe spaces and opportunities for young people.

Councilor Murphy earned degrees in Business, History, and Elementary Education from UMass Boston and later received a Master of Education from Fitchburg State University. She understands firsthand the challenges facing working families, having balanced higher education, student loans, and motherhood.

Prior to her election to the City Council, Councilor Murphy spent more than two decades as a teacher in the Boston Public Schools, working primarily with young children and students with special needs. Her experience in the classroom continues to inform her work on behalf of students, families, and educators.

Councilor Murphy is a strong advocate for public health and recovery. She has run multiple marathons to raise awareness and funds for substance use disorder and mental health services, raising more than $60,000 for the Gavin Foundation.

On the City Council, Councilor Murphy prioritizes transparency, accountability, and accessibility. She is known for her presence in neighborhoods across Boston, her responsiveness to constituents, and her collaborative work with city departments to improve core city services. Her legislative and oversight efforts focus on education, public health, housing, public safety, and effective city governance.

Councilor Murphy believes that effective government begins with listening. She remains committed to representing every neighborhood, strengthening public trust, and delivering practical results that improve quality of life for Boston residents.
