Consumer Affairs and Licensing

COVID-19 update: Phase 3 of the state's reopening plan will not start until July 13 in the City of Boston. Our office is closed to the public, but we have staff working remotely. You may reach us Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., by emailing MOCAL@boston.gov or calling 617-635-4165 (Licensing), or 617-635-3834 (Consumer Affairs). We also created a list of related COVID-19 advisories.

We license and regulate entertainment activities in Boston. We also educate the public on topics like credit rights and consumer scams, and help consumers fight deceptive business practices.

We maintain safety and order in Boston's restaurants and nightclubs through the licensing and monitoring of entertainment activities. Aside from educating the public, we also advocate and mediate on behalf of Boston consumers. Find out more about our work.
