Fixit Clinics

Explore troubleshooting and repair with volunteer coaches.

WHAT IS A FIXIT CLINIC?

Fixit Clinics are free workshops where people bring broken stuff—from bikes to blenders to blazers—and volunteer coaches share their tools and know-how to help troubleshoot and (hopefully) repair items. These meet-ups build hands-on skills, confidence, community, and a culture of reuse and repair. The City of Boston Environment Department is partnering with Boston community groups to offer these events across our neighborhoods.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
  • A broken gadget, small appliance, computer, toy, textile good, or other item
  • Useful tools and parts, if you have them
  • A description of what’s wrong and anything you’ve tried to fix it—advance online research is helpful
  • A desire to learn and share your knowledge!
These events are family-friendly and open to all. Interested in becoming a Fixit Coach yourself? Come lend a hand.

Community Partners

Want to host a Fixit Clinic near you? The City is seeking community groups interested in partnering to offer a Fixit Clinic for their members and neighbors.

What does a community partner do?
  • Work with the City to select a time and date for a clinic in your neighborhood
  • Promote the event to your community network
  • Publicize via social media, newsletter, and flyers
  • Help recruit volunteer fixers
  • Volunteer 1-2 support staff to help set up, run, and break down the event
What does the City supply?
  • Logistical coordination
  • Promotional materials
  • Repair tools and other supplies
  • Technical assistance and day-of support staff

Partners do not commit any funding. For groups in need of an event space, the City will secure the use of a nearby venue, such as a public library or community center. Partners are invited to join a growing culture of reuse and repair in Boston.
