Language Access Information and Services

Learn what language accessibility services we offer.

The City of Boston has interpretation services, translation services, and assistive listening device support to help provide access to City events and services.

Need Interpretation

On demand interaction (walk-ins, phone interaction)

City staff are trained on how to acquire on-demand interpretation. Front-facing staff and departments have the language ID cards visible for the public to point out and request for language access for individual languages. We also have a mobile version available.

We use both the language line and video remote interpretation for on-demand interactions. Interpretation services can be made available by phone or video within a couple of minutes.

For planned interactions (In person appointments, meetings, events)

You can request an interpreter if you need help in another language besides English, including American Sign Language (ASL).

Departments should include a notice of accommodations in their outreach efforts. The notice should include: phone, email, and the deadline to submit the request (usually two weeks before the event).

Live interpretation is provided for planned events and meetings, both virtual and in person.

Constituents can also come to City Hall to request scheduled interpretation services for City related programs and activities at least two weeks in advance.
