How to Get a Library Card
Physical Card
To get access to physical media and in-person resources, you'll need a physical library card. You can get a card by going to the circulation desk at any Boston Public Library location.
What you'll need:
- A Photo ID
- Proof of Massachusetts Residency (whether a physical document or a document available on an electronic device)
- Kids under 12 can can get a card with a signature of a parent or guardian
A Massachusetts License or ID card will satisfy both requirements.
If you don’t have a Massachusetts driver’s license or state ID, you can bring some other form of ID that shows your picture and signature along with official mail sent to you at a Massachusetts address.
If you have a preferred first name, you can use that for your library card. Your preferred first name does not need to match your ID. An ID or bill with a deadname or legal name is still a valid form of address verification. All changes to your record require proof of ID.

Who is eligible?
