Boston's Oldest Buildings

As Boston approaches its 400th anniversary, it is remarkable that it still maintains its historic character despite constant development. Join City Archeologist Joe Bagley as he gives us a guided tour to 50 buildings which pre-date 1800 and illustrate Boston’s early history. The majority of the buildings are located within the downtown area of Boston along the Freedom Trail and within easy walking distance from the core of the City, but also include examples from various neighborhoods. The buildings span multiple uses from homes to churches and warehouses to restaurants. Bagley's easy-to-follow narrative will cover historic preservation and significance and will appeal to architectural enthusiasts as well as anyone interested in Boston history.

Joseph (Joe) Bagley has been the City Archaeologist of Boston since 2011, an historic preservationist, and a staff member of the Boston Landmarks Commission. Prior to this position, he worked for several private archaeology firms and the Massachusetts State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). Bagley has conducted archaeological excavations on hundreds of Native American and Historic archaeological sites from Maine to Florida. He is the author of the award-winning, "A History of Boston in 50 Artifacts". He lives with his wife, also an archaeologist, and his dog in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston.

After the talk, we will offer each participant a free Landmarks Commission promotional pin.
