City Council adopts resolution to observe October 15 as White Cane Safety Day
In 1931, the Lions Club began promoting the use of white canes for people who are visually impaired as a national identification program.
Congress adopted a joint resolution in 1964 designating October 15 of each year as White Cane Safety Day, recognizing that white canes are an essential tool that enable visually impaired and blind people the ability to achieve a full and independent life, allowing them to move freely and safely from place to place.
Last week, the Council adopted a resolution, observing October 15, 2020, as White Cane Safety Day and called upon schools, colleges, and universities to offer full opportunities for training to visually impaired and blind persons, and to open new opportunities for the visually impaired and blind in our rapidly changing society.
