City Council shows support for nurses at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center

This week the Council adopted a resolution offered by Councilors Breadon, Essaibi-George and Mejia expressing support and appreciation for the work of the registered nurses and all healthcare staff of St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center.

In the last 12 months, registered nurses filed more than 330 official “Objection to Unsafe Staffing” reports detailing instances where nurses were forced to take excessive patient assignments, posing a serious threat to the safety and well-being of patients.

St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center reported significant profit to the Massachusetts Commission on Healthcare Information and Analysis (CHIA), showing that their corporate owner Steward Healthcare has the financial capacity to abide by its agreements with nurses caring for the patients of this community.

“In the midst of this current public health emergency I know that the nurses at St. Elizabeth and everywhere will be working to the best of their ability to deliver quality care to their patients. I urge the management at St. Elizabeth’s and Steward Healthcare to honor their contractual commitments to their nurses and to sit down and resolve this issue,” said Councilor Breadon.

With the adoption of this resolution, the Council calls upon the executives of St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center and Steward Healthcare to honor their commitments to the community, nurses, caregivers and patients they serve, by providing safe staffing and resources needed to provide the best possible care.
