City to unveil Washington Irving school's new green infrastructure design

The Washington Irving Middle School in Roslindale is the first in the state to address green infrastructure and stormwater.

Tomorrow, Mayor Martin J. Walsh, Boston Public Schools Superintendent Tommy Chang, Boston Water and Sewer Commission Executive Director Henry F. Vitale and students, staff and faculty from the Washington Irving Middle School will unveil the school's new green infrastructure design.

Boston leads the way in Massachusetts classrooms, and Washington Irving is the first school in the Commonwealth to addresses green infrastructure and stormwater. Green infrastructure designs for this project include outdoor classroom and laboratory spaces for students, teachers and community members to interact with green infrastructure (GI) and gain a better understanding of how stormwater is managed.

Washington Irving Middle School is the first completed school designed with green infrastructure, a collaboration between Boston Public Schools and Boston Water and Sewer Commission. This project incorporates elements of BWSC's stormwater management best practices into the BPS's BuildBPS Master Planning process. Four additional Boston Public Schools will participate in the collaboration. Washington Irving is considered the project's flagship.
