South End: Who doesn't love a good makeover?

Here at the Boston Landmarks Commission, we enjoy sharing neighborhood success stories that promote the reuse and redevelopment of Boston's historic spaces.

This time around, we are celebrating some of the preservation success stories in the South End. Do you have a building that you would like us to highlight? Shoot us an email blc@boston.gov.

A landmark district since 1983, the South End has proven to be one of the most dynamic and sought after neighborhoods in the City. Originally built in the mid-nineteenth century for Boston's burgeoning middle class, the South End has seen waves of constantly changing demographics, all contributing to the neighborhood's vibrancy. The South End's success is a testament to how a historic district can encourage both human-scaled development and the protection of the area's historic character. I invite you to take a look at some of the neighborhood's most striking building transformations over the years that were a result of both public and private investment. Under the guidance of the South End Landmark District Commission, these (and many other) examples will be preserved to tell their story for generations to come.
