Education

Boston's FY26 budget invests in schools so that every child in every classroom has an equitable, world-class, high-quality education.

Boston’s FY26 budget supports a high quality educational experience for every child. Between the Boston Public Schools (BPS) and charter schools, public education makes up almost 40% of the City’s FY26 budget. A BPS operating budget of $1.58 billion will support over 50,000 students in public schools, and $292 million will support roughly 10,070 Boston students in charter schools.

Education Funding

Nearly 90% of the BPS budget will go into schools or toward direct student services.

Education Budget by Fiscal Year

The City's education budget will increase by $54 million over the FY25 appropriation, a combination of $45.5 million growth in the Boston Public Schools (BPS) budget and $8.8 million in Charter School Tuition assessment payments.

In FY26 BPS will invest an additional $10 million in inclusive practices, continuing the rollout to new grades. The goal of this work is to close opportunity gaps for the highest need students, including students with disabilities, multilingual learners, and black and brown students.

The district will also increase support for multilingual learners and new arrivals with a $4 million investment. This will fund four new bilingual programs, three additional newcomer programs for recently arrived students, and two additional programs for students with limited or interrupted formal education.

Also in FY26, a $5 million investment in schools will boost educational programming. Program expansions will improve career-readiness and early college options, while school expansions will grow the number of  high-quality seats.

The FY26 BPS budget does not reflect costs related to a new contract for the Boston Teachers Union. These costs are instead included in the central collective bargaining reserve until the agreement is finalized.

BPS Capital

The Long Term Facilities Plan for Boston Public Schools will result in new, renovated, and reconfigured school buildings in partnership with the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA). The planning process is focused on creating high-quality, twenty-first-century learning environments that enable students to close opportunity gaps. Over the next five years, the FY26-30 Capital Plan invests almost $1.2 billion in BPS-related spending
