TIME STRETCHES SLOW
Solo show by Genevieve Cohn
The Boston City Hall Galleries are pleased to present Genevieve Cohn’s first Boston solo exhibition, Time Stretches Slow. Presenting paintings made in the last five years, this selection brings together moments from the artist’s ever-evolving mythology. Through each piece, which she describes as a chapter or short story of a bigger narrative, she envisions possible communities of women by drawing from both a historical and imaginative past, present, and future. By utilizing imagery and ideologies from the Women’s Land Army during World Wars I and II, female separatist communities, and elements from fairy tales and literary fiction, her work reflects a world where female power is rooted in collaboration, self-endowed agency, and a profound connection with the natural world.
The characters of these stories, in the words of the artist, “often engaged in building fences, planting gardens, and crafting protective structures”, are first and foremost weavers. They braid each other’s hair, intertwine branches and sticks, interlock bricks, rope and thread. They weave womanhood and community, establishing connections between water and light, shadows and memory, and above all, support networks.
Genevieve Cohn grew up in rural Vermont and holds an MFA in painting from Indiana University. She has participated in residencies at the Fiore Art Center, The Vermont Studio Center, The Ragdale Foundation, and AiRGentum. She currently resides in the Boston area and teaches at Wellesley College.
