Install or Repair a Roof Deck

If you’re repairing or installing a roof deck, you’ll need either a Short-Form or a Long-Form permit depending on what type of work you’re doing.

Who can repair or install roof decks?

  • Homeowners and contractors can apply for the Short-form or Long-form Permit.
  • Homeowners and contractors can install or repair a roof deck if the work is being done on a 1-2 unit owner-occupied home.
  • You must hire a contractor to apply for the permit and perform the work if it’s being done on a three-family or bigger dwelling, such as:
    • an apartment building
    • a multi-unit condo, or
    • one floor of a triple-decker house.

What permits do I need?

Short-Form Permit
  • For repairing an existing roof deck and making no structural changes, such as expanding its size. You’ll need to provide the permit and engineer-stamped plans from the original build.
OR
Long-Form Permit
  • For installing a brand new roof deck, expanding the size of an existing one, or when you cannot provide the original approved plans and permit.

How do I apply?

The Short-Form and Long-Form Permit pages list the steps you need to take, including:

  • Understanding what documentation is required
  • How to apply online
  • What to expect after applying
  • What to do after work is completed
