Original Proposal

This proposal will offer grants to nonprofit organizations to build community gardens on underutilized land for public access and use. It will prioritize areas where people have limited access to affordable, nutritious food. This project will create a healthier environment, beautify the community, address food insecurity, and build camaraderie among residents. Garden operations must have a robust rodent management plan.

Budget Breakdown

Total Budget: $500,000

Spent/Committed: $348,800

Remaining: $151,200

Support Community Gardens in Neighborhoods with Limited Access to Affordable Food

GrowBoston  is recommending $348,800 in grants for two community gardening projects through the Participatory Budgeting initiative:

  • Garrison Trotter Neighborhood Association ($298,800): Will convert an underutilized Roxbury lot at 48 Townsend St. into a new 25-plot community garden.

  • Heal the Hood, Inc. ($50,000): Will construct new garden beds for residents within the South St., Archdale, and Alice Taylor public housing communities.
