Install Or Replace Washer, Dishwasher, Or Garbage Disposal

If you’re replacing or installing washers, dishwashers, or garbage disposals you’ll need to hire a contractor who can apply for a Plumbing Permit and perform the work.

If you are renovating an entire bathroom, please refer to the renovate a bathroom or kitchen website instead.

Who can install or replace?

Only a contractor with a valid, non-expired Massachusetts trade license may apply for a Plumbing Permit and perform any plumbing work related to installing or replacing these appliances.

What permits do I need?

Plumbing Permit
  • If you are only replacing or installing a sink, toilet, shower, or bathtub and no other work needs to be done, such as opening up walls.
Electrical Permit
  • Only if you need to install, move, or repair any electrical wiring.

How do I apply?

The Plumbing Permit and Electrical Permit pages list the steps you need to take, including:

  • Understanding what documentation is required
  • How to apply online
  • What to expect after applying
  • What to do after work is completed
