Recognizing the Contributions of Boston’s Jamaican and Dominican Communities

Boston’s strength is shaped by the diverse cultures, traditions, and contributions of residents from around the world. The Council adopted resolutions recognizing Jamaica Independence Day and Dominican Cultural Day, celebrating the histories, achievements, and lasting impact of Boston’s Jamaican and Dominican communities.

The Council recognized August 6 as Jamaica Independence Day in the City of Boston, honoring Jamaica’s independence and the contributions of Jamaican residents throughout the city. The resolution highlights Boston’s significant Jamaican community and recognizes the community’s contributions through entrepreneurship, culture, public service, education, healthcare, and other fields. The resolution also acknowledges the importance of celebrating the heritage and achievements of Jamaicans and the Jamaican diaspora in Boston.

The Council also recognized August 16, 2026, as Dominican Cultural Day in the City of Boston. The resolution highlights the contributions of Boston’s Dominican community through areas including business, sports, politics, education, arts, music, and culture. It also recognizes the role of organizations such as Semana Cultural y Festival Dominicano de Boston in celebrating Dominican traditions and values.
