Julia M. Mejia

City Councilor, At-Large

Boston City Councilor At-Large Julia Mejia is a trailblazer and a dedicated community advocate. Making history in 2019 by winning her first term with a single vote, she became the first Afro-Latina to hold a seat on the Boston City Council. In her fourth term as a City Councilor At-Large, Councilor Mejia is a proven barrier breaker, independent voice, and someone who speaks truth to power while creating space for others to step into their power.

Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Boston by a single mother who was undocumented throughout her childhood, Councilor Mejia developed a dedication to advocacy from an early age. She learned to navigate through the many social service systems and institutions and to advocate on behalf of her needs and those of her family and community.

As the first person in her family to graduate from Boston Public Schools and college, Councilor Mejia's dedication to justice and equity led her into the role of a community organizer. Her focus was and continues to be empowering and investing in the capabilities of individuals across diverse backgrounds and identities, enabling them to participate in the political processes that shape their neighborhoods. Leveraging her background as a community organizer and former non-profit founder/director, she works to dismantle systems of oppression and serves as a microphone for voices sidelined by special interests; Councilor Mejia unapologetically centers those left behind. Her policymaking is rooted in community, shaped by lived experience, and driven by love, accountability, and collective power.

Over her past three terms, Councilor Mejia has passed or co-sponsored over 20 pieces of legislation, helped establish dozens of new City departments and roles, and secured millions of dollars for critical community development to address the social, emotional, and financial needs of Boston’s constituents. Her time in office highlights her dedication to advancing policies that invest in Boston's diverse communities as well as understanding that addressing the holistic needs of all individuals requires a commitment that extends beyond legislative accomplishments. Councilor Mejia’s office produces community impact programming regularly, serving families, small businesses, and all our communities.

One of her lasting contributions is the establishment of the Government Accountability, Transparency, and Accessibility Committee within the City Council. Recognizing the significance of government oversight and compliance, Mejia actively works towards measuring the success of protocols, policies, and procedures to tackle persistent issues in education, housing, economic development, transportation, and more.

Now as she enters her fourth term, Councilor Mejia remains focused on unifying Boston residents across their differences to bring about meaningful change. At the core of her work is a commitment to amplifying the voices of the people and a robust co-governance model that informs every policy her office pursues. Her leadership exemplifies a commitment to inform, influence, and inspire to ensure that the Boston City Council and Departments serve the diverse needs of all Bostonians. She actively works towards dismantling barriers and encourages increased participation in the political process because we know that nothing about us, without us, is for us.
