Parks and Green Space

GrowBoston, the City of Boston’s Office of Urban Agriculture, is proposing to create a half-acre farm on River Street on the Boston Public Health Commission’s Mattapan campus. Currently unoccupied, this 22,000 square feet of green space will primarily serve people experiencing food insecurity by providing fresh produce to Shirley’s Food Pantry, located on the same campus. GrowBoston is exploring the possibility of a weekly farm stand as well.

The operator of the farm will be contracted first, then the builder separately. GrowBoston will oversee design, construction, and operations of this farm.

The River Street Farm is expected to have the following:

  • Field(s)
  • A shed
  • A wash station
  • Shade structure
  • A cooler
  • Fences
  • Water connection
  • Walkways
  • A compost bin
