Parks and Green Space

Tucked into the heart of Roxbury, St. James Street Park is a small but cherished neighborhood treasure. At just .39 acres, this intimate park has long served as a welcoming place for children, families, and neighbors to gather, play, and enjoy some of the best skyline views in the city.

Originally created during the early Playground Movement which was a national effort to provide safe, dedicated play spaces for children; the park reflects an important moment in Roxbury’s history, when the area was transforming from rural land into a vibrant urban neighborhood shaped by new transportation and a growing citywide parks initiative.

The park was last renovated by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department in October 2003, and for decades it has continued to serve as a reliable, open, and joyful space for nearby families. Its scale and setting give it a unique charm: close to home, easy to reach, and woven right into the fabric of the surrounding community.

Now, as we begin planning the next generation of improvements, we’re excited to work hand-in-hand with residents to reimagine what this tiny but meaningful park can become while preserving the sense of place that has made it special for so many years.
