North Beacon Street

We plan to install separated bike lanes on North Beacon Street between Everett Street and Vineland Street.

Residents identified North Beacon Street as a priority for improved biking through the Allston-Brighton Mobility Plan

Today, there is no dedicated space for biking. We plan to install separated bike lanes. Some amount of on-street parking will need to be removed, and the width of travel lanes reduced. The narrower travel lanes will help calm traffic speeds.

We upgraded the curb ramps at existing crosswalks already. New crosswalk locations can be added.

DESIGN PLANS

VIew the design plans (PDF)

We plan to make changes to North Beacon Street in Fall 2023. We will:

  • Add a separated bike lane on each side of the street
  • Add a new crosswalk west of Vineland Street

We are also looking at the traffic signals at Faneuil Gardens, Market Street, Life Street, Arthur Street, and Everett Street. We may make changes to how these signals operate to increase safety and efficiency for all users. The Route 57 Transit Priority Corridor project will examine potential changes to signal timing at Union Square.

Why North Beacon

Everyone in Boston deserves safe streets

A group of six youth are riding bikes on a path by their school.

This project is part of a bold plan for transforming Boston's streets to better serve people walking, rolling, and riding bikes. Over the next three years, we will expand our bike network so that 50% of residents will be a 3-minute walk from a safe and connected bike route.

The Allston-Brighton Mobility Plan was adopted in May 2021. Through that planning process, residents identified North Beacon Street as part of a future continuous bicycle connection between Oak Square and Union Square via Faneuil Street, Market Street, and North Beacon Street.

Neighborhood Context

There are other bike lane projects happening in Allston and Brighton this year. This is part of our work to quickly close gaps across the City in Boston's emerging network of low-stress bike routes.
