Route 86 modernization efforts

The Boston Transportation Department and MBTA are proposing some pedestrian-focused improvements along the Route 86 bus route, from Reservoir Station to Guest Street.

These modernizations aim to improve ADA accessibility, travel time, and reliability through various small-scale infrastructure changes. Some of these changes will take the form of: 

  • bus-stop relocations
  • additional crosswalks
  • additional bus shelters
  • new signage, and
  • enhanced safety and ADA accessibility changes.

Scope of work

Unsignalized Intersection Changes
  • Market St. at Vineland St.
    • Move farside to nearside, adding a shelter
  • Market St. Opp Gardena St. 
    • Move to nearside Keenan Rd., add crosswalk on Market St.
  • Chestnut Hill Ave. at Jackson Ave.
    • Move nearside to farside
  • Chestnut Hill Ave. at Beacon St.
    • Move stop further back from intersection, replace headsign
  • Chestnut Hill Ave. at Union St.
    • Move farside to nearside Academy Hill Rd.
  • Market St. at Gardena St. 
    • Move nearside Morrow St. to farside, add a crosswalk
Signalized Intersection Changes
  • Chestnut Hill Ave. at Wiltshire Rd. 
    • Eliminate due to stop spacing
  • Chestnut Hill Ave. at Strathmore Rd.
    • Move farside
  • Chestnut Hill Ave. at Chiswick
    • Eliminate for spacing, consolidate with above
Longer-Term Improvements
  • Signal changes 
  • Intersection design improvements, such as South Street at Chestnut Hill Ave.
Why are we doing this?
  • Recommended through Allston/Brighton Mobility Study 
  • Leo Birmingham Parkway and Western Avenue will be analyzed through separate processes 
  • Develop process for other bus corridor modernization
Timeline
  • January 2022: Final round of outreach
  • February 2022: Public comments incorporated into design
  • Winter 2022 / early spring 2022: Implementation
