Please make sure to close the lid and lock the bin after you finish dropping off your food scraps. This helps prevent contamination and ensures that your food scraps are able to be composted. Thank you!

Best Practices

  • Find a kitchen food scrap container. Look for something with a closed lid that will be easy to carry.
  • Keep it convenient or in your fridge or freezer.
  • Line your bin with a compostable bag or paper bag. BPI-Certified compostable bags are available online and in most hardware and grocery stores. Note: plastic bags are not accepted.
  • Wash your bin. Try adding baking soda to the bottom to freshen it up.
  • Lock the Project Oscar bin after you finish dropping off your food scraps. This helps prevent contamination and ensures that your food scraps are able to be composted.

Where Does Your Food Waste Go?

The City of Boston partners with Black Earth Compost to empty the Project Oscar bins. Black Earth brings the food waste to their composting sites in Manchester, Groton, and Framingham, MA. The food waste is converted into a nutrient-rich compost, which is then sold to regional garden centers, farmers, and gardeners! Black Earth's mission is to keep food scraps in the food chain.
