Monument Square Landmark District Study
On July 26, 2022, the Boston Landmarks Commission accepted for further study a petition submitted by registered voters to designate the Monument Square Landmark District in Charlestown.
The Study Committee will identify the historic, architectural and archaeological significance of the resources located in the proposed district, and finalize the proposed district’s boundaries. Current and future planning issues will be reviewed and discussed to formulate recommendations to preserve the unique historic character of the Monument Square neighborhood while encouraging contextually sensitive new development in appropriate areas.

MeetingsThe Process
- The Mayor and the City Council have appointed and approved a study committee. This committee is made up of local residents and Landmarks Commissioners. They will complete a study report by gathering public input and developing criteria and standards for the district.
- The study report and recommendations will be available to the public (see top of this page) and will be presented to the public and Landmarks Commission for feedback at a public hearing.
- After the conclusion of the public feedback period and any necessary amendments are made to the study report, the final report will again be posted for the public.
- At a subsequent public hearing, the Landmarks Commission will vote whether to approve, or not approve, the creation of a new district.
- If the Landmarks Commission approves, the Mayor has 15 days to approve or reject.
- If the Mayor approves, the City Council has 30 days to approve or reject.
The study committee’s process is public. There will be many opportunities for:
- involvement and input into the consideration of forming a district, and
- in discussion of potential guidelines and standards for the district.
