Lester A. Burton was born on October 12, 1918, in Albany, New York. As a resident of Boston, Lester was very active in his community, and around the age of three he began tap dancing lessons. Later, Lester enlisted into the United States Army and began active duty on September 16, 1942.

With the 318th Regiment of the 80th Infantry Division, he fought his way across France, until he reached the Moselle River. There his company spearheaded an attack on a key terrain as part of Patton’s Lorraine Campaign. During the night, the Germans counterattacked Lester's company. Ironically, Private Burton, who loved dancing, died of a wound to his leg on September 8, 1944.

For the heroism he displayed in his service to our country, Lester was awarded the Purple Heart. Lester was survived by his parents Rose M. McCabe, Lester H. Burton, and five siblings.
