2020 health insurance enrollment opens in May for City employees

Annual enrollment for the City of Boston’s health insurance benefits will take place from May 18 – June 12, for coverage effective July 1, 2020.

If you are interested in adding, dropping, or making other changes to your coverage, you must submit an updated enrollment application to the Health Benefits and Insurance Division by June 12, 2020. If you are adding a spouse or dependent, you will be required to provide proof of eligibility, such as a certified marriage or birth certificate. All necessary documents must be submitted together, otherwise, partial documents will be voided. To submit forms, employees can:

  • Mail to 1 City Hall Square Room 807 Boston, MA 02201
  • Fax to 617-635-3932
  • Upload to Google Drive and share with HBI@boston.gov
  • Email to HBI@boston.gov. Please do not include SSNs as our Gmail server is not secure. Instead, call HBI after submitting the documents to provide the information.

NON-MEDICARE HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN CHANGES EFFECTIVE July 1, 2020

PLAN CHANGE
  • Current: All plan accumulators (co-pay maximums, out-of-pocket limits, therapy visits, etc.) run on a calendar year (January 1 – December 31)
  • NEW: All plan accumulators will run on a plan year (July 1 - June 30)
CO-PAYMENT CHANGE
  • Current: Rx Retail (30-day): $10/ $25/ $45 and Rx Mail Order (90-day): $20/ $50/ $100
  • NEW: Rx Retail (30-day): $10/ $30/ $55 and Rx Mail Order (90-day): $20/ $60/ $135
 NEW CO-PAYMENTS:

ID CARDS
  • New cards will be issued for participants on the HPHC HMO and BCBS PPO plans only
PREMIUM SHARE
  • Retiree share of the premium will increase by 0.5% equating to 20% for the HMO plans and 30% for the PPO plan (see chart below)
