Excessive Heat Warning in Boston
/
Mayor Wu issued an excessive heat warning for the City from Wednesday, July 1, through Friday, July 3, due to the heat in the forecast. The City will activate cooling centers, and pools will be open across Boston.

Boylston Street

We’re planning safety improvements to Boylston Street in the Fenway.

Safety improvements are being designed for all users of Boylston Street in the Fenway. The project area is between Ipswich Street and Park Drive/Brookline Avenue. These improvements will make it safer and easier for people who walk, bike, and take transit.

The reconstruction of Boylston Street was identified as a priority project in the Fenway-Longwood-Kenmore Transportation Action Plan.

Schedule and implementation

The first phase of the project (protected bike lanes on Boylston Street, from Park Drive/Brookline Avenue to Ipswich Street) was completed in 2022. A bike ramp was added in front of the Fenway Health Center in 2023.

This will be followed by a more extensive project in partnership with MassDOT. The MassDOT project will prioritize pedestrian safety and accessibility, while bringing the corridor into a state of good repair. The second phase of the project is planned for construction by MassDOT in 2027.

About the project

This project will:
  • Add new, protected bike lanes on Boylston Street. These bike lanes will connect to existing bike lanes on Brookline Avenue in the Longwood Medical Area, and to shared use paths on the Emerald Necklace.
  • Improve pedestrian safety and accessibility by separating ramps, reconstructing sidewalks as needed, and improving signal timing.
