Charlestown Youth Gaming Study
Studying the impact of the Encore Casino on youth in Charlestown.
The Mayor's Office of Human Services received a grant from the Mass Gaming Commission to study the impacts of the Encore Casino on youth ages 14-25 in Charlestown. Together with our research partner, YZ Design Works, and youth in the neighborhood, we are researching questions such as:
- How do the identities and lived experiences of Charlestown youth affect how and to what extent they are subject to explicit targeted marketing from the gambling industry?
- What are existing community elements that serve as risk or protective factors for young people in Charlestown?
- What role can the City play in protecting youth from being harmed or exploited by gambling?
Project Status
Project StatusThis phase includes initial and in-depth interviews with community members to establish baseline data.
This phase includes fielding an online survey to explore research questions and better contextualize baseline data.
This phase includes conducting focus groups to clarify survey findings.
This phase includes data set construction and analysis; as well as creation of final report and presentation.
