The Sullivan Square Underpass was closed in May 2022 for seven weeks to evaluate and conduct a series of inspections to the structure. As a direct result of those inspections, it was determined that repairs were needed to both the Sullivan Square Underpass and Mishawum Street Bridge. In order to allow crews to complete the necessary repairs in a safe and timely fashion, the Sullivan Square Underpass will be closed to traffic beginning on Tuesday January 2, 2024, through Friday May 31, 2024. Motorists are encouraged to plan accordingly and seek alternative routes.
Traffic Impact
- Sullivan Square Underpass will be closed to traffic from January 2, 2024 through May 31, 2024.
- A total of six Variable Message Boards have been deployed to inform travelers of underpass closure and help alleviate any confusion.
- Boston Police details have been requested to direct traffic through the surface roads for the duration of the closure.
- At the end of May, traffic in the underpass is expected to reopen to not coincide with the planned 2024 Sumner Tunnel Closure (expected July 2024).
Repairs
Rutherford Ave. Underpass
- Repair damaged walls and ceilings.
- Mill, pave and stripe roadway limits.
- Replace median guardrail with concrete barrier.
- Replace and clean drainage system.
- Replace Lighting System.
Mishawum St. Bridge:
- Structural steel repairs.
- Deck joint replacement.
- Repainting steel superstructure.
