Renovate A Kitchen

You will need several different permits and permissions in order to renovate a kitchen. This page will help guide you through the process of determining what permits you’ll need to complete your project.

Required permits

Depending on your situation, you'll need to follow one of two options:

Short-Form Permit
  • If you are renovating an existing kitchen and no other structural changes need to be made, such as cutting into a wall.
Long-Form Permit
  • If you are adding a new kitchen where one did not exist, or
  • any structural changes need to be made, like opening a wall.

Who Can Apply

Contractors
  • The contractor must apply for the permit. Someone else, such as an office clerk, cannot apply for your permit.
  • The permit applicant must be the contractor performing the work.
Homeowners
  • Homeowners who will be completing the work on their own in a 1-2 unit owner-occupied home can apply.
  • You must hire a contractor to perform the work if you own a condo within a building that has 3 or more dwellings, such as owning one floor of a three-decker house.

How to Apply

Visit the short-form permit or long-form permit page for next steps, including:
