Summer Internship Program Recap

Are you curious about what it’s like to work within the heart of city government?

Our 2024 Summer Internship Program was an incredible journey, offering a look into the workings of the City of Boston and providing our interns with hands-on experience and professional development. This summer, our cohort of interns tackled a variety of impactful projects across multiple city departments. From engaging with community programs to managing essential city functions, our interns made significant contributions while gaining invaluable skills.

Jake Silveria (Office of Civic Organizing) dove into the Summer Block Party Grant program, overseeing the distribution of funds that brought joy to local neighborhoods. He shared, “It was inspiring to see the money go back into the community and watch residents enjoy the summer events.” Similarly, Leena Ghrici (Youth Engagement & Advancement) worked on the Youth Lead the Change initiative, renovating homeless shelters and engaging with the community, which allowed her to explore different parts of Boston and connect with its people.

Our interns also had the chance to learn from City employees. Mary Connors (Mayor's Office, Policy) discovered the complexities of city zoning codes, gaining insights into the regulatory processes that influence city development. Abigail Seero (Property Management) emphasized how networking and relationship-building became essential skills, noting, “Connecting with people has been a key part of my growth this summer.” Similarly, Caroline Larangeira (Mayor's Office, Communications/Digital), returning for a second summer, the diverse experiences and networking opportunities stood out as highlights of her internship.

Professional development days were a key component of the internship program, offering specialized learning experiences. Jake Silveria found the personal branding session particularly valuable, stating, “It helped me clarify my career goals and how to market myself effectively.”
