Webster Avenue Playground (Paul Revere Mall) Improvements

Webster Avenue Playground, also known as Old North Church Park, is a small but important public space of approximately 2,400 square feet, located along the Freedom Trail at the end of the Paul Revere Mall (The Prado), directly behind the Old North Church. Despite its modest size, the plaza plays an important role in connecting residents, visitors, and one of Boston’s most iconic historic sites. The park was established in 1933.

Primary Project Type
Parks and Green Space

The primary goal of the project is to make the plaza fully accessible so that everyone; including people using wheelchairs, strollers, or mobility aids can move through the space comfortably and safely. Older paving materials will be replaced with new brick and bluestone that match the surrounding Paul Revere Mall, creating a cohesive look while improving safety, durability, and ease of movement.

This project will coordinate with a separate effort to create an accessible route from Salem Street into the park, ensuring seamless connections between the plaza and the surrounding neighborhood.

In addition to accessibility improvements, the project will focus on protecting existing trees and exploring opportunities to improve stormwater infiltration, helping the plaza function better during rain events. All improvements will be designed to respect the historic character of the site while advancing the City’s goals of creating parks that are safe, healthy, and welcoming for all.
