Public Facilities

Public Facilities

We support other City of Boston departments in the planning, design, construction, and major renovations of City-owned buildings.

With a staff of over 50 construction professionals, we perform all planning, design, construction, and project management of construction and major renovation projects in City-owned buildings. Our staff ensures that these projects:

  • finish on time and within budget
  • stand the test of time
  • fit the architecture of the area
  • create a design that supports the City department's mission, and
  • fit the needs, activities, and goals of the staff and constituents that use the building.

Patricia Lyons is the Director of Public Facilities. She can be contacted via email at publicfacilities@boston.gov.

Learn about our work

We work with colleagues in City government to engage with constituent groups in determining the best locations and design for our construction and renovation projects.

We also ensure that City buildings are accessible to all residents, meet or exceed life safety codes, and are constructed with maximum efficiency and sustainability in mind.

Our legal staff ensures that our contracting processes follow Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 30, Chapter 7 (Designer Selection) and Chapter 149 (Public Construction Bidding).

The Operations and Construction Unit of our department manages capital construction projects from their beginning to end. Our Planning and Management Unit tracks projects, keeps information on schedules and budgets, and manages annual Capital Planning, Master Planning processes, and the Management Information System.
