Upcoming Diversions and Shutdowns
Upcoming Diversions and ShutdownsJANUARY 10–11
Orange Line service will be suspended between Wellington and Back Bay on January 10–11 for tunnel inspections.
- Free and accessible shuttle bus service will replace Orange Line train service. Local shuttle buses will make all stops between Wellington and North Station. Express shuttle buses will operate directly between Wellington and North Station. Riders using shuttle buses to travel from Downtown to Wellington should budget at least 45 minutes of additional travel time.
- Accessible vans will be available at Copley and at downtown Orange Line stations.
- Riders should use the Green Line for continued service from North Station to Copley (~4 minute walk from Back Bay Station). The MBTA will increase Green Line service during this time to accommodate Orange Line riders.
- Riders are also encouraged to consider fare-free Commuter Rail service between Oak Grove and North Station, and between Forest Hills and South Station.
- Fare gates will be open at Back Bay, Copley, Wellington, and North Station.
Impacted riders are encouraged to try biking during the closure, given safe conditions. See the Bicycle Information section below for a suggested bike route. For more information regarding this closure, please visit MBTA's website.
Jan 3–4, Jan 17–18, Jan 31–Feb 1
Sections of the Fitchburg, Haverhill, Lowell, and Newbury/Rockport Commuter Rail Lines will be suspended during the weekends of January 3–4, January 17–18, and January 31–February 1 to upgrade the North Station Terminal Area Signal System, which will reduce train delays and improve service reliability. A dedicated diversion schedule will be available on MBTA.com/CR.
Fitchburg Line
The Fitchburg Line will be suspended between North Station and Porter. There will be no shuttle bus service.
- Riders should use the Red Line for alternative service between Porter and downtown Boston.
Riders should budget at least 20 minutes of additional travel time during this service change.
Haverhill Line
The Haverhill Line will be suspended between North Station and Oak Grove. There will be no shuttle bus service.
- Riders should use the Orange Line for alternative service between Oak Grove, Malden Center, and North Station.
Riders should budget at least 10 minutes of additional travel time during this service change.
LOWELL Line
The Lowell Line will be suspended between North Station and Anderson/Woburn. Free and accessible shuttle bus service will replace suspended train service.
- Local shuttle buses will make all stops between North Station and Anderson/Woburn.
- Express shuttle buses will operate directly between North Station and Anderson/Woburn.
Riders should budget up to 15 minutes of additional travel time on the express shuttle and up to 40 minutes on the local shuttle.
Newburyport/Rockport Line
The Newburyport/Rockport Line will be suspended between North Station and Swampscott. Free and accessible shuttle bus service will replace suspended train service.
- Local shuttle buses will make all stops between North Station and Swampscott except River Works.
- Express shuttle buses will operate directly between North Station and Swampscott.
Riders should budget up to 40 minutes of additional travel time on the express shuttle and up to 70 minutes on the local shuttle.
