Experience a street transformed into a pedestrian plaza on Monday July 22nd

Join the Mayor's Office of New Urban Mechanics (MONUM), the Boston Transportation Department, and the Solomon Foundation for the Liberty Square Pop-Up Plaza at the corner of Water St and Kilby St in Downtown Boston. We hope to demonstrate the possibilities for enhanced public space for seating and activities in this section of downtown. The plaza will be up from 10 am to 4 pm with programming scheduled throughout the day. Feel free to come in and out of the space and also just hang out and bring lunch to enjoy in the space.

On July 14, August 25, and September 15, 2019 shoppers, diners and pedestrians can explore new restaurants, local boutiques, and international brands — or rediscover your favorite Newbury Street gems on a street transformed and free of cars. Find meaning in the melodies of local musicians, challenge your friends to an outdoor game, or simply stroll along enjoying the festive atmosphere of Open Newbury Street. Celebrate Newbury Street, a uniquely treasured place in the heart of Boston.

HOW TO GET THERE

There are multiple MBTA stations in the vicinity of Newbury Street including Arlington, Copley and Hynes on the Green Line and Back Bay Station on the Orange Line and commuter rail. Ride your bike to Newbury Street and lock it to bike corrals stationed throughout the event. Take BlueBikes and dock at stations located throughout Back Bay. Multiple parking garages are located in the Copley Square area south of Boylston Street.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

Newbury Street will be car-free from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. from Berkeley Street to Massachusetts Avenue. The intersections of Exeter Street, Fairfield Street, Gloucester Street and Hereford Street will be car-free with the remainder of the intersections open to traffic for public safety access. Parking will be restricted beginning at 5 am.

BUSINESS PARTICIPATION

The City of Boston encourages all businesses to take part in Open Newbury Street by activating outdoor spaces and taking advantage of the reclaimed public space. All outdoor activations are restricted only to those businesses that have brick and mortar locations on Newbury Street. Leaf and yard waste tips
  • Common yard waste material includes leaves and grass clippings, branches, and yard brush.
  • Place leaves and yard debris in large paper bags. Do not use plastic bags.  
  • Tie branches with string. The maximum size for branches is three feet with a one-inch diameter.

The Parks and Recreation Department will lead the education and removal of invasive species portion of the event. They will help volunteers identify and remove the invasive species that are affecting the Belle Isle Marsh Reservation.

2020 Return of the Swans

After residing at the Franklin Park Zoo for the winter, the City's favorite swans, Romeo and Juliet, will return to the Boston Public Garden for another beautiful Boston summer. 

2020 Return of the Swans

The swans will be returned to the lagoon following a parade that begins at the Beacon and Charles Street corner of the park, near the “Make Way for Ducklings” statues.  Led by a brass band, carts beautifully decorated by Boston’s Winston Flowers will help usher the swans to the release site.

The accompanying entertainment program, sponsored in part by the Friends of the Public Garden, begins at 10:15 a.m.  The celebration will include a brass band, face painters, a reading of “Make Way for Ducklings” led by the Boston Park Rangers, and children’s activities presented by the Four Seasons Hotel Boston.  In-kind sponsors HP Hood LLC and the Four Seasons Hotel Boston will provide refreshments.
